I feel like it’s a little strange to be writing this post, because I just dyed my hair lavender (a post on that is coming soon!!). However, I have gotten quite a few questions about how to keep your hair blonde, and not brassy, for as long as possible. I wanted to share what I’ve been doing lately to manage it.

If you’re not a natural blonde, you know how hard it can be to keep up with your color. If left alone, your blonde will turn into an unnatural, yellow shade. The solution to this problem, is purple shampoo! This is not just any shampoo with a slight purple tint, I’m talking super pigmented purple shampoo that is used to counteract the warm tones in your hair. Now, I’m not a hair/science expert by any means, so I don’t know the ins and outs of how purple shampoo works, but it does and my hair is proof of that!

I first discovered Amika‘s Bust Your Brass shampoo and conditioner when I received a small sample with another purchase I made. I tried it right away, and ordered the full sized products the next day. The results were more visible than with any other purple shampoo I’ve tried.

I’ve been using the Bust Your Brass shampoo and conditioner for about six months now, and it’s amazing. I wash my hair with the shampoo every other day, and always follow with the conditioner. After one wash, you can see the difference in your blonde. It’s much more cool toned, and the brassy, yellow color is gone. Once in a while, I will wash my hair with the shampoo, and then leave the conditioner in for about an hour. This acts as a great nourishing treatment, and it SERIOUSLY tones your hair. I like to do this about once a month at the least, just to make sure my hair stays as cool toned as possible!

While there are a lot of these “purple shampoos” out there, they aren’t all great for your hair. I learned from my awesome hair stylist, Denise (check out her instagram!!), that some of them can be very damaging, especially when you are using them repeatedly. She gave Amika her seal of approval, because there were no signs of damage from the products on my hair. Bust Your Brass is also a cruelty free product, and contains no artificial colors! Basically, it’s perfect.

There are several places online, and in store you can find Bust Your Brass, including Sephora. I’ve linked both the shampoo and conditioner below.

Do you have a favorite product you use to keep your blonde hair cool toned? Let me know!
